The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic consultation for all patients by age 7. While not everyone is a candidate, some patients can benefit from early interventional treatment to address specific orthodontic needs.

This early treatment, termed Phase I treatment, can resolve specific bite or eruption problems including crossbites, underbites, overbites, crowding, missing teeth, and malpositioned teeth, among others. Phase I treatment is geared to reduce (or in some cases eliminate) the time needed in future comprehensive adolescent treatment, also known as Phase II treatment. Those who are not candidates for Phase I treatment could be candidates for comprehensive treatment in the future when adult teeth are present. The ideal treatment approach many factors, including your stage of growth and tooth eruptions. Your orthodontist will conduct a comprehensive examination and consultation to determine if you are a candidate for treatment, and the ideal timing depending on your specific needs.
